Day 93 of 1461

Meditation

“Today’s builders of Babel tell us that there is no room for losers, and that those who fall along the way are losers. Theirs is the construction site of Hell. God’s economy, on the other hand, does not kill, discard or crush. It is lowly, faithful to the earth. Your way, Jesus, is the way of the Beatitudes. It does not crush, but cultivates, repairs and protects.”
Pope Francis, Good Friday 2025, The Way of the Cross

Significance

In these powerful words, Pope Francis contrasts the harsh, competitive systems of our world with the gentle and compassionate way of Jesus. The “builders of Babel” refer to those who glorify success, power, and perfection—systems that leave no room for weakness or failure. In these systems, people who struggle—due to poverty, illness, mental health, or simply misfortune—are labeled as “losers” and pushed aside. But Pope Francis reminds us that this way of thinking leads to a spiritual and social “construction site of Hell,” where humanity is lost in pursuit of empty triumphs.

God’s economy, as he calls it, is something very different. It honors humility, care, and faithfulness to the earth and to one another. It values every person, especially those who are most vulnerable. This message is more relevant than ever in today’s world, where many feel discarded or unseen. Political division, economic injustice, and the pressure to constantly “win” have created a culture of burnout and exclusion. Pope Francis’ words—and his life—invite us back to a path of compassion and solidarity. Across traditions, we are called to protect, not crush; to lift up, not leave behind.

Affirmation

Today, I choose to honor the lowly, uplift the weary, and walk the path of compassion. I am part of a world that cultivates and repairs—not one that discards.
