Teaching
“Just as a solid rock is not shaken by the storm, even so the wise are not moved by praise or blame.”
—Dhammapada, Verse 81
Significance
This verse from the Dhammapada, one of the earliest and most beloved Buddhist texts, encourages us to stay steady and calm even when the world feels unstable. It reminds us that wisdom helps us remain grounded—not because we ignore problems, but because we face them without being consumed by fear or anger.
Right now, many people are afraid. Elected officials are not doing their job to hold those in power accountable. The executive branch of the government seems to be ignoring laws and rights that are supposed to protect us all. In times like these, it’s easy to feel helpless or overwhelmed. But the Buddha’s teaching tells us that wisdom means being like a rock in a storm—strong, aware, and unmoved by fear.
This doesn’t mean we stay silent or do nothing. It means we act from clarity, not panic. We speak truth with calm, we support one another with courage, and we work toward justice without losing our inner peace. Fear may rise, but we don’t have to be ruled by it.
Affirmation
I am steady like a mountain in the storm. Fear does not rule me. I act with clarity, wisdom, and courage.
