Day 86 of 1461

Verse
“Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink?… When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’ The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’”
—Matthew 25:37-40 (NIV)

Significance
This passage from the Gospel of Matthew comes from a moment where Jesus speaks about the final judgment. He teaches that how we treat others—especially the vulnerable, the forgotten, and the imprisoned—reveals the true state of our hearts. He identifies himself with those who are suffering, reminding us that care for “the least of these” is care for him.

In our current world, we are seeing cases where people are imprisoned without trial, or where they remain in jail even after evidence shows they may be innocent. This situation is not only a legal or political issue—it is a moral and spiritual one. When people are denied justice, we as a society must ask whether we are still honoring the humanity of every person. If we ignore or turn away from their suffering, we are ignoring the suffering of the divine itself, as Jesus describes.

This teaching challenges us to speak out, to visit the forgotten, and to demand fairness. It reminds us that silence and inaction make us complicit. Justice is not complete until it reaches everyone, including the wrongly imprisoned.
