“Three things cannot be long hidden: the sun, the moon, and the truth.”
— The Buddha
We reflected on this Buddhist teaching in yesterday’s post, and it feels just as vital—if not more so—today. News has emerged that the Librarian of Congress has been dismissed without public explanation. While the specifics remain unclear, the timing raises deep concerns about the growing trend of narrative control and the suppression of knowledge and truth in our country.
In Buddhist teachings, truth is not just a moral virtue—it is a force of nature. Like the sun and moon, it may be obscured for a time, but it inevitably returns. Silencing truth, censoring knowledge, and purging history from public libraries may seem like political moves—but they are actually spiritual violations. They go against the universal law of dharma: that which is true, just, and life-sustaining.
This is not a partisan concern—it’s a human one. Across traditions, we are taught to seek wisdom, not erase it. In the Jewish tradition, the destruction of books is tied to warnings from the Talmud about suppressing divine knowledge. In Christianity, the command to “love the Lord your God with all your mind” demands access to learning. In Islam, the very first revelation to the Prophet Muhammad was “Read.” In the Baha’i Faith, independent investigation of truth is a sacred duty. And in secular democracy, an informed citizenry is the cornerstone of liberty.
Authoritarian regimes—from Russia to Hungary, North Korea to Nazi Germany—have all begun their descent with the same chilling tactic: rewriting history and eliminating dissenting voices. Book bans and the firing of principled librarians may feel like minor administrative acts. They are not. They are the early cracks in the foundation of a free society.
If you support the idea of democracy—regardless of political affiliation—this is your wake-up call. Truth is not red or blue. It is light. And when light is dimmed, darkness spreads.
I honor truth as a sacred light. I will not look away. I will speak, share, and stand in the name of wisdom—for myself and for generations yet to read.
