Proverbs 4:7 (NRSV):
“The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom, and whatever else you get, get insight.”

Significance

This proverb places immense value on wisdom and insight—not just as personal virtues, but as societal necessities. It reminds us that education, understanding, and the pursuit of knowledge are foundational to a meaningful life and a just society. Throughout history, both the Christian and Jewish traditions have honored learning as a sacred duty and a tool for growth, justice, and peace.

Today, as colleges and universities face growing pressure, defunding, and public criticism from political figures, we are witnessing more than just policy debates—we are watching the dismantling of institutions that have served as cornerstones of civilization. Higher education is where future leaders are shaped, where cures are discovered, and where innovation begins. When these institutions are targeted as enemies rather than nurtured as assets, we risk not only the loss of jobs and careers, but also the weakening of truth, critical thinking, and our ability to move forward as a society. Regardless of political affiliation, we must reflect on whether undermining the pursuit of knowledge serves the public good—or harms it.
