Day 89 of 1461

Teaching
“They have healed the wound of my people lightly, saying, ‘Peace, peace,’ when there is no peace.”
—Jeremiah 6:14 (NRSV)

Significance
This verse comes from the prophet Jeremiah, who spoke out against leaders and communities who pretended everything was fine while deep injustice and harm were taking place. “Peace, peace,” they said—offering empty words—while real wounds were ignored and allowed to fester. This verse is a warning against false comfort and denial when people are suffering.

Today, we see a similar denial in how some leaders respond to gun violence. They offer thoughts and prayers, but no real action. Meanwhile, students are dying. Schools, meant to be places of learning and safety, have become sites of fear and trauma. People cry “peace” without doing the hard work of creating it—like passing common-sense gun laws that would save lives without infringing on anyone’s rights.

Jeremiah’s words challenge us to be honest about what’s happening. There is no peace when students are being shot on campuses and in their classrooms. If we care about life—if we care about justice—we must do more than speak comforting words. We must change what allows this violence to keep happening.

Affirmation
I will not accept false peace. I speak the truth in love and act with courage to protect those who cannot protect themselves.

Interfaith Prayer for Those Affected by the Florida School Shooting

Eternal Presence,
In this moment of grief, we lift up the lives lost and the lives forever changed by the violence at Florida State University.
We speak the names we know and hold space for those we do not.
Their stories, their dreams, their futures—cut short by a tragedy that should never have happened.

We pray for the wounded—for healing of body, mind, and spirit.
We pray for the grieving—that they may be surrounded by love, upheld by community, and comforted beyond words.
We pray for students and teachers everywhere who now walk through their days carrying fear.

May we not grow numb.
May our sorrow turn to compassion, our compassion to courage, and our courage to action.
Help us create a world where safety is sacred, and where every being lives in peace.

Amen.
So may it be.
In every tongue, through every tradition—let us stand together.
