Teaching
“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”
—Romans 12:2 (NIV)
Significance
This verse from Paul’s letter to the Romans is a call to resist being shaped by unjust or harmful systems. It encourages individuals and communities to think freely and wisely—to pursue truth rather than follow the loudest or most powerful voice. It also speaks to the importance of education in shaping a society that seeks justice, compassion, and understanding.
Today, we see efforts to strip universities of their independence and silence the study of important truths—such as racism, gender inequality, and the history of marginalized people. These actions are not only political; they are moral. When a government tries to control what we are allowed to learn, especially by threatening funding, it moves us closer to authoritarianism. It seeks to erase uncomfortable truths in favor of a false narrative that protects power.
Universities must stand their ground. Education must remain a space for honest learning and open dialogue. If we want a society that values truth and human dignity, we must protect the institutions that teach those values—even when doing so comes at great risk.
Affirmation
I honor truth and defend knowledge. I stand with those who teach the full story of humanity. May my voice support justice, not silence it.
