Day 68 of 1461

Verse

“You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

John 8:32 (NRSV)

Significance

This verse from the Christian Gospel of John is a reminder of how powerful truth really is. In its original context, Jesus is talking about spiritual truth and how living in alignment with that truth brings freedom. But the message applies broadly — in all areas of life, truth matters. It brings clarity, justice, and growth. Without it, we are more likely to repeat mistakes and let injustice go unchecked.

In today’s world, especially in schools, libraries, and museums, some parts of history are being erased or watered down. Stories about racism, colonization, genocide, and oppression are being removed or rewritten. When this happens, we deny future generations the chance to understand what really happened — both the good and the painful. This erasure keeps people in ignorance and allows harmful systems to continue. If the truth really does set us free, then hiding it keeps us trapped. Honoring the truth of history — even when it’s hard — is how we begin to build a better, freer future for everyone.

Affirmation

I honor truth in all its forms. I will seek to remember, not erase. By facing the full story, I help build a more just and compassionate world.

When we erase history, we erase people. Truth — even when it’s uncomfortable — is what sets us free.
